Hello, I am Clare Walsh

I am so honoured to be the Labour candidate for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton. Knowing the positive change that Labour will make in power has been the inspiration behind the work that I have been putting in both locally and nationally to make this happen. I’m committed to campaigning full-time, and with polling giving Labour a 46% chance of winning in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, we are the only challengers to the Conservatives in this constituency.

My Story

I moved to this area when I became a Special Guardian to my two children, placed with me by social services. I knew they needed to be raised surrounded by a community that would encourage them to thrive.

We love this amazing area, our community that steps into the gaps of need, in our brilliant local charities such as My Sister’s House, Grandad’s Front Room, Turning Tides and Stonepillow, but as brilliant as these organisations are, they cannot compensate for the destruction of our public services.

I see this in my Mum, a nurse in the local preventative health team, working with organisations like UK Harvest to reach vulnerable people, but it is funding and committed support that is lacking.

The negative impacts of 26 years with a Tory MP, and 13 years of Tory government have to be reversed. Wait times in Sussex for General Surgery are 14 weeks for first appointment and 26 weeks for treatment, the crime rate in Bognor Regis is 45% and in Littlehampton 30% higher than the South East regional crime rate.

On the doorstep people have been telling me they do not feel safe, that they worry about the groups of young people hanging around our town and village centres. Labour will fund our NHS, bring in new technology to make systems and processes more effective, put police back on our streets, give our young people a school system that inspires and equips them with the knowledge and skills both they are our nation need to succeed.

We need to rebuild the understanding of Britain as a place where success is achievable, where the future can be great.

I’m a researcher by profession and I’ve been working with policymakers, councillors, MPs and prospective MPs across the South Coast and in Westminster to bring about change. I have advised the All Party Parliamentary Group on Kinship Care, the Transparency Implementation Group changing the family courts and written economic policy pieces addressing the nonsense narrative of this government on debt and spending.

I am legally trained and worked for the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), so I am well placed to deal with the root cause of the criminal gangs responsible for the increased levels of illegal immigration.

I was born in Coventry, but moved to Canada as a child, coming back to do GCSEs and then went on to university studying history, law and international development.

I’ve always campaigned and worked for social justice, from giving free legal advice at Toynbee Hall when I lived in East London, working for the new Hillsborough Inquests, to supporting local refugee families with the charity Sanctuary.

I’ve been building relationships with local constituencies, campaigning in Worthing West with Beccy Cooper, Crawley with Peter Lamb and Portsmouth with Stephen Morgan and Amanda Martin.

From now until the General Election I will be working non-stop to give voters in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton the reasons they need to vote Labour.
